The inaugural Arkitrek Camp will be held on Mantanani Island, Sabah on 2nd – 23rd May 2011. We’re looking for sponsorship either in cash or in kind in the form of building materials to help us build a marine conservation awareness centre.
The Camp aims to use the vehicle of a community tourism program on a small island to teach young architects and construction industry professionals the principles of sustainable design.
Participants will design and build an icon for marine conservation whose chief function will be to accommodate environmental education workshops for local and visiting school children and tourists.
The rural environment is an appropriate place to learn the processes of sustainable design and methods for engaging communities to become better stewards of our natural resources. By comparison; in urban environments nature may be a remote concept, we may only be able to see small chunks of infrastructure systems and of course there are far more people and communities making participatory engagement more complex.
The construction budget is RM15K to buy materials such as; cement, stainless steel nuts+bolts, roofing sheet, roof lining, timber products and tools. Camp participants and organisers cover their own expenses so sponsorship is limited to the project’s construction materials costs.
The camp will be covered by national and international media and in addition to these publicity opportunities the sponsors will also be associated with the social return on the unique Arkitrek approach to development, people and natural resources.
The experience of building your own design is a critical step in an architect’s training and the sense of achievement in doing so is a key outcome of the Arkitrek Camp. We hope that a new community of architects and construction industry professionals will take away lessons of stewardship of the natural environment and the confidence to apply them to the great challenges of urbanisation.
