Hi, gussie. We planned the masterclass over the holiday period to make it easier to take a week off. There will be another masterclass at the end of February. Details to be announced soon.

  3. How often you guys have this masterclass? Working can be hard to find time to attend this. Really want to get my hands into bamboo construction.

    • Tom

This specific masterclass is a one off- but it should form part of a monthly masterclass series on a variety of different topics including things like earthbag construction, sustainable sewage systems and probably more bamboo related workshops. Let us know what you are interested in and what sort of time of the month is good for you and we will try and arrange towards popular interests and convenient times.

  4. Dear Sir/Madam

If you have small holes at the bottom of first flush diverter, when the water gets out through the small hole, the ball which at the top of diverter lowers simultaneously. Then again the gutter water fills the diverter again.

    Give comment for the above…

    • Ian

Munaver jaman, there are supposed to be small holes to drain the diverter after the rain stops. The trick is to get the hole size right so that during rain the diverter does not drain more quickly than it is being filled up.

  7. Hi, I am a local Dusun. The ULU Papar can be access through our district also (Tambunan) but of cos’ by foot. I am interested in this bammboo craft since I was young. I know a little bit of craft work (traditional basket and matt) but I am keen to learn on the making of blind and commercial matt (like Taiwans and Philipines)

And of cos to the extend of house furnitures.

  8. Sounds like something that will be real useful in the long term as lots of bamboo grow where I live. Three days from now is a bit too sudden to decide & make preparations. Please keep me informed of future bamboo masterclasses, thank you!

    • Ian

Antares, thanks for your comment and interest in natural building techniques. If you can’t make this one, we have another starting 22nd February, which teaches earthbag construction and bamboo weaving.

  10. This is the grittiest, most gory-detailed HowTo Instructable that I have ever read. Brilliant! Never mind every Arkitrekker, every Westerner should be handed a pocket-sized version of this article upon their first arrival in Asia.

    • And now for the flip version where an asian have to go to the western world where the western roommate complains and is left bewildered by the noise the asian roommate does.

“Whenever she going into the toilet after doing her thing, I keep hearing her using the shower water for no reason!! What is going on?!”

      Well.

I welcome you to asia anytime my friend.

  11. i am working on a project for college final year. I am trying to collect biogas from the digester but could not collect the gas for testing purposes. can you please provide some insight reagarding the same.

  13. Why the hell didn’t someone write this up 15 yrs ago…??? I have been living in SE Asia for over 14 yrs now, and this is by far the best guide to cleaning up after using the squat toilets I have ever seen. Period. Took me way too long doing it wrong before I sussed this procedure to such a degree of perfection, especially the wet hand trick. If our paths should ever cross, the first two frosty beverages are on me!!!

  14. Superb, and as frank as I’d expect from you. Buy why didn’t you give me this briefing years ago?

  15. This looks like a great project/location! Good effort!

  16. Hi Jason,

Nice to see you at FABE, IUKL yesterday.

Hope that you succeed in your projects in Arkitrek. 🙂

    I’m proud of you. 🙂

  19. Sir please give me some more details about biocrete block. As i am in last year engineering so i want to this topic as a final year project..

  20. Beautiful post Sophia. You guys are truly a salty bunch!

  21. Hi from Menorca, Spain.
After a search of several days on the internet and local technical consultations, I decided to build my septic tank using your design because it seems efficient, simple and environmentally friendly.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and work freely in the earth community.
If you give me an email I will send you some pictures of our work at home about it.
    With kind regards,
    Sigfrid

    • Ian

Dear Sigfrid, we’re very happy that you have found our Septic Tank information useful. Please let us know how your tank goes and send us any feedback.

  22. Sophia, well-said. Good piece of published article.
I vow to be the ‘salt’ whenever I go and work at.

That’s the underlining principle of an Arkitrekker!

    🙂

    Zhen Ron.

  23. I’ll vow to be a salt too Sophia. 🙂

  30. Hi,

I am interested to build an eco house by copying the hemp/lime “cast in” concept. However, I would replace the hemp fibers with coconut husk fibers (in the dominican republic).

The wooden frame work gives the strengh to the roof and walls, and then the coco fibers + lime are casted in. (no sand, no cement.)

In your opinion, what would be the drawbacks from using this technique?

thanks for inspiring so many of us 🙂

    • Ian

Dear Jean-Charles. Coconut coir works very well and creates a stronger bio-crete. The only problem is workability: it’s harder to mix than shorter fibres such as rice husk.

Bio-crete cast-in to timber frame is very effective. The lime also helps to protect the timber from termites. To get the passive cooling benefit, the walls need to be at least 200mm (8″) thick, which gives you a challenge/opportunity for how to design the timber framing.

Finally, think about your formwork, which can be temporary or permanent. If temporary, plywood for example, you can take it off when the bio-crete is set and re-use it. In this case finish the bio-crete with a lime:sand plaster or mud:lime plaster. If you’re using permanent formwork: it needs to look good and be water permeable. We’ve always used timber, but I’m sure there are other options.

Please share your results with us.

      Best wishes, Ian

  31. Hi, i’m also developing a similar watertank for watertreatment. I’m wondering what type of inner waterresistent seal will You use in Your project?

  33. Wonderful detail. Amazing… left-handers (who’d use their right hand for this procedure) get to shake right hands without the co-shaker being aware of the impending cataclysmic effects.

  34. Please share more photos (outside+inside) of the earth bag house. This probably the first in Malaysia.

  38. I’ve been following arkitrek both here and on Facebook. You guys did an amazing works. I have one question though. Where can I buy / get CETA Ram brick press in KK or anywhere else in Sarawak. It’s a very useful tool for us here at Opai Sama where cost of brick are exorbitant. Cheers!

  39. Great piece of free material for any DIY person. My only criticism is, that the font is barely readable, keep this in mind for the next edition…
