Discovery Centre at Shangri La Rasa Ria Resort
Formerly known as the nature interpretive centre, the Discovery Centre services a programme to educate the resort’s guest about the fauna and flora of Borneo, including endangered and endemic species. The centre is positioned as the gateway to a trail network that explores the hinterland of the resort. This wildlife reserve is managed by rangers who provide information and interpretation to guests.
The building design by Arkitrek features tactile exhibitions and is designed to enhance our connection to nature. The decision to adapt an existing structure was taken to reduce carbon emissions and resource consumption. The foundations, concrete frame and timber structures are all existing, and belian roof shingles have been re-used in creative woven façade panels.

Shangri La’s Rasa Ria Resort and Spa is one of Sabah’s flagship luxury hotels. It is located on the east coast of Sabah, near the town of Tuaran, in an area that is ecologically characterised by coastal swamp forests and mangroves interspersed with long sweeping beaches. In the early morning, before the tropical clouds gather you can ascend a hill for a view inland to the iconic Mt Kinabalu.
