Arkitrek 2013 was the first of a new series of design-builds. Continuing from the 1-month peer-led design workshops of 2010-2012, Arkitrek 2013 aimed to cover more bases of architectural practice, all in a hands-on, experiential learning, Arkitrek-type fashion.

The programme began with 1 month at the Centre for Renewable Energies and Alternative Technologies (CREATE). The team designed and built a workshop space and classroom, (also used as a yoga platform) extending a reclaimed structure and cloaking it in a bamboo facade. At the time of construction, the building was the most challenging yet to be attempted under an Arkitrek design build. Our thanks go to Martin for giving his time to facilitate, it was great to have him back in the team again.

After 1 month the team members were matched with other Arkitrek projects and sent out around Sabah to lead these projects on site. Chloe took over from Safuan on the Community Centre at Bongkud; Izzy got stuck in at Camp Lemaing near Kg Kiau; Filzah went back to Kg Buayan and skilfully facilitated the team of Edinburgh students as they embarked on the Buayan Bio-Cultural Centre; Malcolm got the Tinangol Kindergarten closer to completion, and Rory, Kate, and later Chloe, joined the SAFE design build and used their new experiences to contribute to the Powerhouse project. Kate has stayed on site and is currently working to get the SAFE laboratory construction underway. Jonathan, has been at BSBCC and has been a great site architect, getting the project near to completion. We only missed Wen, who moved to Barcelona at the close of the design-build to continue her studies.

Soon we will release full details of Arkitrek 2014, which will progress the development of Arkitrek’s design/builds, incorporating more peer-to-peer training workshops. However, the core objectives remain the same as ever;

-to give high quality design services to social/ environment based organisations and communities and

-to subvert the ego, creating a truly peer-led, process driven, design centred learning experience with great facilitation.
